Memorable (2019) - Bruno Collet, France, 12 min. - 8/10 - A truly imaginative and clever use of the medium, being so fantastically representative of the impossibly unknowable. A depiction of what can only possibly be inferred; the altering mental landscape of someone else’s perception. But so gorgeous, ingenious in it’s evolution, and profound in bringing to life the inexplicable. Big fan.
Hair Love (2019) - Matthew A. Cherry & Everett Downing Jr., USA, 7 min. - 7+/10 - Touching, truly. Able to aptly capture such deep emotion in such a short time with pretty much no dialogue, which was quite the feet. The representation and positivity should push it over the top, but this was a fabulous short film.
Kitbull (2019) - Rosana Sullivan, USA, 9 min. - 7+/10 - perhaps the most naturally and standardly heartwarming animation example. It’s funny, sweet, and palatable to all.
Sister (2018) - Siqi Song, China/USA, 8 min. - 6+/10 - Really cute. The yarn-esque wooly world gave it a softness and tactile empathy. The end felt a bit like a political message in a student film, but it wasn’t any less worthy.
Daughter (2019) - Daria Kashcheeva, Czech Republic, 15 min. - 6/10 - Beautifully ugly. There is such realistic vibrancy and some of the fabrications, despite being so amorphously abstract. Imaginative and poignant, though detached.
Special Recognition:
Henrietta Bulkowski (2019) - Rachel Johnson, USA, Idk it’s short - 7-/10 - Deftly animated and charming. Took a twist, but it was quite good.
Maestro (2019) - Florian Babikian & Victor Caire, France, 2 min. - 6/10 - Short and pleasing. An idea perfectly animated and communicated, albeit only that.
Hors Piste (2019) - Léo Brunel & Loris Cavalier, France, 6 min. - 6-/10 - Lite and fun, meant to be a hilarious misadventure and succeeding somewhat.
The Bird and the Whale (2018) - Carol Freeman, Ireland, 7 min. - 5/10 - The animation process was intense, though the story was a tad thin. Lovely to watch, that is for certain.
