SILENT NIGHT (2021)

12/2/21 - Silent Night (2021) - 5/10

If you would like one of the darkest and bleakest holiday films you will come across, this might be the treat for you. It's an odd mixture of family and friends dramedy against the backdrop of the impending death of every living creature on the planet. It’s a dour subject, not only everyone’s death but the coming choice between agonizing death and painless suicide that pulls at the social strings binding loved ones together.

There is a distinct level of awkwardness, oddity, and alienness that made it inaccessible - at least for a while. There was a familiarity of friendship that you get dropped in, which gave it a semblance of being a lived in world, but the subtleties of past history & some cross-cultural cacophony kept part of it at arm’s length, especially when paired with the specter of unspoken global genocide.

The japes are dark with the drama telling, distinctly in this time of doom scrolling, ubiquitous death, and official untrustworthiness. Still, the juxtaposition of holiday romp and apocalyptic horror opens the door to all types of emotional outbursts and fun.

I would speak to the questions  brought up by the ending, but I won't spoil it for you. I will just say it makes you wonder.

It's a solid and fascinating Christmas detour that might be right up the dark alley we all find ourselves in as of late.
