5/21/22 - Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022) - 6/10
A reboot about making a reboot. Similar vague cleverness like the Matrix Resurrections, but enjoyable. I was quite surprised with how much this clicked for me and though simplistically mid in ambition, executed its jokes, bits, gags, and pop culture elbow-in-the-ribs with aplomb. It knows it’s lame and stays in it, excelling while doing so.
It is “Reference City”, but I thought they were respectful and intelligent in how they used them. Imagine Who Framed Roger Rabbit but packing a Ready Player One (movie) pop culture gatling gun. It’s everything all the time, but they weren’t all as self-satisfied or minimal effort. They elicited laughs, namely because they worked, being clever and prudent. Referentially, it killed, at least for me and this exact year.
Not everything works, but given what it is and its share of blitzen crass marketable balleyhoo, it hits more than it misses. Unexpectedly, its cute, smart-ish, funny, and pretty decent. Who knew?
