JUNGLE BOOK (2016)

January 03, 2017 by Jacob Nelson in 2016, 6, DRAMA, FAMILY, FANTASY, J, Oscars 2017

1/3/2017 - Jungle Book (2016) - 6-/10

A well put together re-imagining of the Kipling & Disney tale. It is a competent redo of the animated film, providing solid storytelling and a fun rendition of a childhood classic. Nothing overly amazing, but heartfelt, engaging, and perfectly palatable as a kids film.

The element that stands out amongst all else is the amazing CGI. Maybe my favorite of the year (except Kubo) and my favorite animal depictions, maybe ever. So detailed, realistic, and perfectly rendered within the context of the film. Deserving of serious awards buzz.

Voice acting is solid, though Murray and Walken are distracting. They are both big characters, and when you give those actors that much leeway, they take over. Their songs, with their specific interpretations, don't really fit. I don’t really think this more “genuine” version really allowed for the musical incorporation. I would have had a wink & nod, instead of full out musical numbers.

I wasn’t in love with the child actor, but the surrounding elements make up for his shortcomings. Besides, it is difficult for mature and experienced actors to excel with complete green screen acting.

A decent little film with some brilliant visual artistic achievements.
