2018 OSCAR ANIMATED SHORTS

February 12, 2018 by Jacob Nelson in 2017, ANIMATED, O, SHORTS, FAMILY, SPORTS, Oscars 2018

2/10/2018 - 2018 Oscar Animated Shorts

My Pick: Garden Party

Oscar Probable: Lou

Dear Basketball (2017) – 6-/10 – Sweet and sentimental, but short and light on much else. The pencil sketch style was well animated, but I have seen it done better as of late.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6794476/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Negative Space (2017) – 6+/10 – Cute blend of humor and melancholy. The paper mache-esque figures were well done and the pop of that final scene was perfect.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7090150/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Lou (2017) – 7-/10 – Easily lovable and smartly animated. Not much depth to the story, but it is heart warming and effective. Quite good, as one would expect.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6267732/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Revolting Rhymes Part One (2016/2017) – 7/10 – Probably the most fun of all of these. By far the longest and most in depth. The animation is crisp, the voice acting on point, and the overall leaves me wanting more. Big fan.

Garden Party (2017) – 7+/10 – This was my personal favorite. Charming story of frogs and toads, but it weaves in this dark adult backdrop. Makes for an interesting premise for a story that is both nothing and everything. The tale is enjoyable, but the realistic cgi animation was otherworldly. Magnificent work.

Others/"For Your Consideration"

Achoo (2018) –6/10 – Tremendously cute, but a bit too cute. By far the most “kiddie” of everything shown here. It looked good.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7993166/?ref_=fn_al_tt_3

Weeds (2017) – 6+/10 – I think this could have deserved a nomination. Spartan in its depth, but strong work that carries weight and is sublimely manufactured.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7592274/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_3

The Lost Property Office (2017) - 5/10 - A beautiful little piece of expressionistic fantasy. Stark and escapist, but somewhat unenthusiastic.
