HUSH (2018)

January 07, 2019 by Jacob Nelson in 2018, 6, H, HORROR, THRILLER

9/5/18 - Hush (2018) - 5+/6-/10 -

Hush never strives to expand the genre or redefine its limits, but rather electrifies that genre fence and battles inside it. This was a strong one-note exploration (final girl scenario with a cut-off-from-society deaf woman) that chugs along smoothly and adequately ramps up the taught distress of the situation. The novelty of the situation and its dire consequences is obvious but still quite effective. It is easy to get sucked into her plight and maneuver yourself around in her head-space.

The necessity to monologue to us with a voice was understandable, but I might have appreciated if they had worked a little harder to get there without the crutch of voice. It wasn’t a thrill kill, but solidifying her silence and telling a story for those that can hear while preserving that unique aspect would have really felt special.
