PALM SPRINGS (2020)

July 14, 2020 by Jacob Nelson in 2020, 7, COMEDY, P, ROMANCE, SCIENCE FICTION

7/13/20 - Palm Springs (2020) - 7-/10

Easily enjoyable and charming as we journey down the path of Groundhog Day and Happy Death Day towards the neverending now. Its a fun ride traipsing through the same day again and again, that avoids being boring, stagnant, and predictable (to a degree). It's a well-worked modern comedy that has a nighlistic coating, a darkly amusing chew, and a sweet-but-not-overly-sentimental center.

Samberg is toned down and not “too” Sambergian, capitalizing on what works for him in Brooklyn 99 and taking it even a bit further dramatically. The big expressive eyes and rye comedic ambition of Cristin Miloti more than hold her own, while bringing a responsive poise that proved necessary. Simmons is a fun sprinkle throughout.

The surreality and the deep intrinsic in-joke of it all, was thumbs up for me. I appreciate that we have an end to the story but not all the answers.

Dinosaurs. Missing teeth. Cake explosives. Yes please.
