BIG GOLD BRICK (2022)

February 28, 2022 by Jacob Nelson in 2022, 3, B, COMEDY, FANTASY

2/25/22 - Big Gold Bricks (2022) - 3/10

A bizarre little dalliance of a film that just doesn’t really go anywhere or have much of a point. Kind of Royal Tenenbaums blended with John Dies at the End. Weird, not that funny, and generally feckless.

No offense to the lead actor Emory Cohen, but though delivering at times the intensity and madness necessary, his casting was questionable. There just seemed to be a vacancy of relatable charisma - I was always at arm’s length, especially when surrounded by a smorgasbord of oddities and caricatures. Speaking of which, Garcia is often good along with the purposefully aloof allure of Fox but the entire film’s enjoyment is a buildup for the bananas Oscar a Isaac cameo as a duplicitous Bond villain doused in Lynchian sensibilities, for he is the most delightful portion of the film.

There is a thought of an interesting film. A mix of odd people, fun smashing them together, and some offbeat peculiarities. It’s a weird little fairy tale, but did I care? Sadly, no. A bit adrift, aimless and inarticulate - ultimately it doesn’t work.
