BROKER (2022)

January 13, 2023 by Jacob Nelson in 2022, 7, B, DRAMA, FOREIGN

8/11/22 - Broker (2022) - 7/10

Koreeada has a style, tone and theme that are near unmistakable and Broker hums his heartsong well. Another tale of ramshackle, scraping by on the edges of society family, full of touching self recognition and searing heartbreak. I think this one took a little more time to grow into itself than others, but by the last act, you are beyond invested, struggling to swallow that aching lump in your throat. There is an earnestness and light playfulness from the cast -  a lull you into the lightly poked depths of these characters before they gut us with sympathy and passion.

Probably the most tender and well-meaning distillation of such a story, Koreeada keeps you guessing as to which thread will be pulled to complete or collapse this autumn sweater.

A love letter to mom, in all her multitudinous majesties and malleable manifestations.
