BANSHEES OF INISHERIN (2022)

January 07, 2023 by Jacob Nelson in 2022, 7, B, COMEDY, DRAMA, Oscars 2023

11/7/22 - Banshees of Inisherin (2022) - 7/10

His patented tale of existentially bereft simpletons struggling with the crushing weight of living…but in a funny way. McDonagh has an ingenious way about his work - instilling a consistently beautiful and engaging dichotomy, slick with devastating blood as it is thick with befuddling laughter.

Everyone in the cast is fantastic and oh so tangible. Our leads and co-stars are all impeccable, with maybe Kerry Condon in her earnest & measured portrayal as the sister capturing my eye. But you can’t throw a deceased donkey bell in any direction without nailing an outstanding performance and wickedly engaging character.

It’s a simple but powerful story that inhabits a lovely mythic quality - a pseudo-modern folk philosophical dark farce. And it is funny; genuinely and completely, while slowly impaling you on isle spire of despondency & disillusionment. A fantastic and moving film.
