BARBIE (2023)

February 17, 2024 by Jacob Nelson in 2023, 8, B, COMEDY, FANTASY, Oscars 2024

7/30/23 - Barbie (2023) - 8+/10

I was apprehensive about what this film would be and how much I might enjoy it. It blew me away.

Existential, feminist, empowering, poignant, moving, and delightful. It was more than I ever dreamed could be a movie about Barbie, which is a testament to the talents behind the film. Can Greta Gerwig do anything? I think probably yes.

It took the most materialistic, capitalist and patriarchal fantasy and finesses that into an articulate and empowering message full of love, playfulness, and joy. It was incredibly smart, witty, humorous and passionate. It took a film concept that seemed silly and ridiculous to make and they simply created magic of it. An exceptional achievement that I found truly amazing.

Leaving the theater, I was kind of speechless, but the smile said everything. Exquisite and extraordinary. A film everyone should see and can work for every audience…except the far right.
