BOTTOMS (2023)

February 17, 2024 by Jacob Nelson in 2023, 6, B, COMEDY

9/2/23 - Bottoms (2023) - 6+/10

A cutting pastiche of heteronormative mission for friction with bloody decadence unlike much out there. Like what Blazing Saddles does to the Western, Bottoms lays it on thick and droll for the teen sex comedy. Casting the outcast lesbians as equally horny and misguided but also coalescing their quest around feminine and empowerment and a takedown of the engendered status quo of the Uber mini-society (high school) in the most misguided of ways was just a fantastic time.

It eschews all subtlety for top notch takedowns and viscousness, physically and facetious. It recognizes and embraces its tone, firmly coming down on the side of knowing send-up and not ridiculous & misguided. The jokes pop, the expression hits, and the voice sings.

Sennott kills her biting dialogue (that she also co-wrote) and Edibiri wonderfully harnesses an earnestness in her persona dramatically and comedically, despite entrenchment in the duplicitous sex and sparring scheme. The rest of the cast nails it as well.

A tight 90 romp that is just f*cking funny and eagerly entertaining.
