2017

BEST OF

2017

January 01, 2018 by Jacob Nelson in 2017

Near end of the year "Top 10"movie list. I saw 97 “new movies” (feature length movies seen this year that have come out in the past 18 months), but I am still in the process of watching a ton of movies. Prestige/award show time of the year.

Favorite Feature Films of 2017 (that I have seen thus far):

1. Dunkirk - 8+/10

2. The Big Sick - 8+/9-/10

3. Lady Bird - 8/10

4. Raw - 8/10

5. Blade Runner 2049 - 7+/8-/10

6. A Ghost Story - 7+/8-/10

7. The Florida Project - 7+/8-/10

8. Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, MO - 7+/8-/10

9. Personal Shopper 7+/10

10. The Square - 7-/10

Honorable Mentions:

It Comes At Night – 7+/10

The Beguiled – 7/10

Baby Driver – 7-/10

"Not sure if it counts for this year or last year" special pick:

I, Daniel Blake - 8-/10

Worst of the Year:

The Great Wall - 2+/10

Baywatch - 2+/10

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets - 2+/3-3/10

xXx: Return of Xander Cage - 3-/10

Movies that didn’t work for me but everyone else loved:

Get Out - upon 2nd viewing, I liked it more, but I still don’t think it is quite the cat’s pajamas

Star Wars Last Jedi - I am happy that so many loved it. I did not. I am not a troll or angry fanboy. I just thought it was a sloppy misstep and didn't function well as a film. Oh well.

Superhero Films Ranking:

  1. Wonder Woman

  2. Logan

  3. Thor Ragnarok

  4. Spider-Man Homecoming

  5. Guardians of the Galaxy 2

  6. Justice League

*Did not see Lego Batman yet*

A sampling of ones I couldn’t/didn’t get to yet that might have what it takes. This is what happens when you aren't a professional critic and don't live on one of the coasts. :

The Post, Shape of Water, Call Me By Your Name, Phantom Thread, I, Tonya, among many many others…
