THE BIG SICK (2017)

November 15, 2017 by Jacob Nelson in 2017, 8, B, COMEDY, DRAMA, ROMANCE, Oscars 2018

7/?/2017 - The Big Sick (2017) - 8+/9-/10

Wonderful film. Stirring, with depth and weight but not melodrama. It felt genuine and lived in, while still being hilarious. Comedy is so difficult, but this was so expertly conceived and embodied. I loved this movie!

The comedy timing was exquisite, which allowed the drama to rise and fall while keeping the audience honest - often the desire for tears and chuckles was equally weighted. When was the last time you laughed out loud and grippingly wiped away tears within the same 5 min? So smartly humorous and painfully earnest, both situationally and with the actors.

Nanjiani, though not stellar, serves as workable in his passionate acting pieces. It helps that he got to play himself, so his delivery clicked and possessed a naturalness. Kazan was great with an adept expressiveness in minimal portions. Hunt and Romano were also both quite strong, bringing gravitas and heart throughout. Inspired casting really.

I loved this movie. I loved what it had to say, its sincerity, and its skill in being made. Almost every beat is hit with poise and style, with nary a wasted impulse or invocation. It is a film that deserves to be seen along with all the accolades. Big fan.
