HE NEVER DIED (2015)

March 16, 2016 by Jacob Nelson in 2015, 5, COMEDY, DRAMA, FANTASY, H

3/16/2016 - He Never Died (2015) - 5-/10

I wanted to love this film. Rollins does a terrific dead-pan delivery and nails this maladjusted & anti-social outsider role so well. It had the makings of a really interesting and humorous genre story. Unfortunately, it mostly treaded water, even if it is in a wholly enjoyable and wry pool.

It felt like an early scriptwriting/directorial effort, which it is. There was a lot of potential here, with a dark and fun tale, well cast actors, and a serviceable look, but it never quite came together to be all that it could. A limited history and jumpy story logic can work, but the ending felt cobbled and hollow, not delivering on our questions or the internal logic of the character/his journey. Needed a little more honing to nail it.

I was into it from the off, and even through it's lackings, I was engaged and attuned. It is likable but lacking, delivering an average-ish movie.

(Side note: I hate this f'n movie art. Bad move, whoever thought that was a good idea. Dummies.)
