PURGE: ELECTION YEAR (2016)

August 11, 2016 by Jacob Nelson in 2016, 4, ACTION, HORROR, P, SCIENCE FICTION

8/11/2016 - The Purge 3: Election Year (2016) - 4-/10

More Purgeyness. Mostly weak and contrived stories/characters paired with irritatingly apparent metaphors, interesting costumes, fair share of gory deaths, and mildly thrilling action pieces. Good? Of course not. It's a Purge film. But it maintains a mediocre level of entertainment.

Heavy handed and thick on metaphor as hell. To be expected of a Purge flick, but this one was more so than before. Not laden with dire prophecy as was hyped, it mostly carries through on the ideals cultivated in the 2nd film.

As avg/mediocre as this franchise and its core conceit is, I will give them credit for continually adding flavor to the murder stew. Their "Spring Breakers" version, Purge tourism, "Cyborg" villain-like "strongest of them all", culty Purge right-wing Christian adaptation, and Conan fight pits with swords & axes. Fun ideas, however poor the films in total are.

This franchise, I feel, is viewed as candy covered trash. Somewhat accurate, but probably a tad better than they get credit for. Their watch-ability sustains, even if the quality doesn't rise. At least, this one should have finally purged these film idea from the ether.
