STAR TREK: BEYOND (2016)

October 07, 2016 by Jacob Nelson in 2016, 5, ACTION, S, SCIENCE FICTION, Oscars 2017

10/7/2016 - Star Trek Beyond (2016) - 5-/10

Fun but insubstantial. Felt a lot like an episode of one of the series, both to its benefit and its detriment.

Lin did not "over Furious" the film as I had feared from the trailers. The action was solidly plotted out, though the angles & cuts had me guessing as to specifics at times.

The plot was a tad nonsensical. Too often you were asking "why" or "how", when it would have helped to have either focused more on the questions or sprinkle some answers throughout. Instead we get uneven motivations/explanations and info dumps when it is too late to care.
All-in-all, it’s a servicible and safe sci-fi/action film and a middle-of-the-road addition to the Star Trek cannon. Whether you loved or hated the JJ reboot stuff, I can’t imagine this film stirring emotions too far one way or the other.
