LOVING (2016)

January 13, 2017 by Jacob Nelson in 2016, 6, BIOGRAPHY, DRAMA, L, ROMANCE, Oscars 2017

1/13/2017 - Loving (2016) – 6+/10

A deep romance buttressed by an abiding sense of dread. Subdued, but true to their essence, telling a simple story of simple people just trying to live out their basic human rights. There is a consistent sense of hope, despite it being buried in everyday struggle and resignation. This is a “forlorn whisper down a desolate back road” of a film.

Negga was quite good but Edgerton was just as good, if not better. His face, posture, and emanating demeanor was ever present and palpable. Both performances were instances of melting into the scenes and roles, as little dialogue was present and even less "showey" material to chew on. Strong work and, next to the importance of the story, the meat of the film.
