BRIGHTBURN (2019)

July 12, 2019 by Jacob Nelson in 2019, 4, B, COMIC BOOK, HORROR, SCIENCE FICTION

6/29/19 - Brightburn (2019) - 3+/4-/10

Superman gone bad. Pretty simple and fairly bland. The jumps are stock and the intrigue minimal. But, you know what you are expecting and it does not vary in the slightest way. That may be beneficial in some minds, but I ached for more and found myself bored with what I received.

If you are hoping for some distinctly gruesome horror elements, then you are in luck. The moments are disgusting but decently executed, in a Saw-ish splatter fashion. I can’t say that all the super powered deaths are exhilarating or all together interesting, but there are some grim ends, if you are looking for a ray of black sunlight.

Banks carries the only emotional weight well, but it is minimal. Not really necessary to discuss anyone else, character or otherwise. There is no real struggle, depth, journey, or meaningful consummation. It is a vacant paint by numbers on the whole; paper thin plot loosely dangling between solid thematic pillars. Read any of the numerous comics to explore this concept. They all do it better.
