JUDY (2019)

January 14, 2020 by Jacob Nelson in 2019, BIOGRAPHY, DRAMA, J, ROMANCE, Oscars 2020

12/14/2019 - Judy (2019) - 4+/5-/10

I suppose she did a very good job acting, but I have little point of reference and the singing was a bit off for me. Perhaps her mannerisms and her presence was right, but I can’t say that I ultimately cared or found it enticing. The film is a bit lackluster overall, dodging the story elements that I found fascinating. I know the film wasn’t meant to be about a young Garland, but her life under the studio’s thumb and what created the damaged icon shown is what intrigued me. This later, tired and nomadic lost woman just felt absent.

It reminded me of Florence Foster Jenkins; an “ok” but dull film, that gets praise heaped upon it because of a pretty good acting performance, but it was mostly a bland little remembered snore. It probably didn’t help that they decided to tell this story with allusion and hints, rather than some solid emotional back and forth. It just felt lacking so often. But I guess Zellweger was good, for what that is worth.
