FREAKS (2019)

February 27, 2020 by Jacob Nelson in 2019, 6, DRAMA, F, SCIENCE FICTION

1/2/20 - Freaks (2019) - 6/10

In the vein of Push/Chronicle/Fast Color superpower movies mixed with the thriller drama of Frailty and Hidden, we see the dark side of the mutant/X-Men tale. A Heroes horror tale that didn’t have the silver lining. It had clever twists, a pleasant blend of horror, thriller, psychological angst and decent CGI/super powers exploitation. Solidly done genre playtime that I found better than I had expected.

The special effects/creation of the super-normal powers was pretty well done. It leaves things to the unknown in the right way, inside the story of the film and in the greater context of the film’s world. I appreciated the under-explained but distinctly lived in oppressive feel of the world. A nod to good building.

It certainly isn’t going to change anyone’s life, but it was a pretty decent little flick. Likable, intriguing, and tight in most senses. It played well on the hatred and persecution that is at the heart of the X-Men/mutants trope.
