CORPUS CHRISTI (2019)

February 08, 2020 by Jacob Nelson in 2019, 7, C, DRAMA, FOREIGN, Oscars 2020

2/7/2020 - Corpus Christi (2019) - 7-/10

With a face to read everything into and eyes that pierce the Polish landscape as “God’s country”, CC grips the viewer. It marvelously works, being darkly fun and letting the dramatic tension germinate. The vines of doom intrude into every crevice of the story, until things burn and explode in a naked and bloody end.

The end shot was right out of Come and See, with the gaunt broken protagonist staring down the barrel of the camera. In each, we are lost, broken, and uncertain of a bleak future. But there are worse films to borrow from/be influenced by, as both also bring stellar drama and a perpetual emotional dump.

I certainly enjoyed CC. It evolved from what I expected into something that kept me guessing and appreciating.
