THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE (2024)

March 04, 2025 by Jacob Nelson in 2024, 5, DRAMA, FOREIGN, G

3/1/25 - The Girl With The Needle (2024) - 5/10

It is a starkly beautiful film that is a psyche grinding soul root canal that was too bleakly perilous to enjoy. Danish misery in the form of doom-scrolling the life of a pregnant post-war woman that is only at the beginning of her misery, which gets immensely worse minute by minute.

So European and depressing but has so many beautifully constructed shots and black & white lighting of repute. I finished it but is there purpose in this pain - it’s more like torture porn for depression and stark nihilistic loss of dreams. No, this movie is too damn much and I don’t need that in my life.

As scared and horrific on this inside as the outside - it’s like 1920s Danish Requiem for a Dream but I truly did not enjoy my time with it. Too crushingly cruel. Plus, despite being tied back in eventually, the opening feels like an art school snippet rather than a valid intrinsic part of the narrative or style.
