SINNERS (2025)

March 14, 2026 by Jacob Nelson in 2025, 7, ACTION, HORROR, S, Oscars 2026

4/22/25 - Sinners (2025) 7/10

The gloss and grandeur of a modern masterpiece while it’s guts and grim grit are 80s/90s genre fun. It’s a bold bombast flick with current cool and exalting edge. Like Dead Presidents + Young Guns + Near Dark + Streets of Fire, mashed together and beefed up. Bolster that with some heavy and cathartic messaging about black art & its place within the culture, namely white culture vampiricly syphoning off of it -  but sliding it slickly through while surrounded by siren songs, bizarre bloody baddies and cunniglingus.

More fun than award worthy, but it certainly has elements of graceful greatness (paired with some melange of messy), but I could see it getting love from the Academy when the time comes. Just not their normal fair, but I think it speaks to the zeitgeist and is pleasing the crowd and box office in a way to have them take notice and reward.

Lindo is awesome, Jordan is the epitome of cool in his dual roles, and Jack O’Connell will be a force to reckon with in the years to come. And there is nothing I can say about the “magic of music” scene that can enlighten or elucidate but it is bravura filmmaking from someone doing what they believe and want to do which is always to be appreciated.
